Soda Pop Odyssey

So for more times than I care to remember, I have tried to give up or at least cut down on the amount of soda's I drink in the run of day/week/month.

So I thought maybe if I write about it, I might have more of a reason to not fall off the wagon(or on the wagon? Seinfeld anyone?).

So far today I have had two glasses of water and a bottle of chocolate milk.
Now, I have a problem. I have a half a bottle of Coke sitting next to me at work, left over from last night. Tempting!

I thought that since Root Beer doesn't have as much caffeine, at least advertised as having less that it would be better, but thanks to a tip from Andrew Sisk, I did some checking.

According to http://www.cocacola.ca
250ml of coke vs Barq's root beer.
The coke has 26mg of caffeine and 30g of sugar, the Barq's has 15mg of caffeine but a whopping 31mg of sugar!!
YOWZA.

Pepsi has even more sugar!
355ml of Pepsi has 41g of sugar and 38mg of caffeine.

Mug's root beer does have zero caffeine, but still has over 20g's of sugar.

Stupid sugar.

While writing this I have polished off that bottle of Coke, it was more like a 1/4 of a bottle, not a half.

5 Quick questions.

First off, who are you and what band are you in?

Ryan Crane. Lead singer of Smothered In Hugs. I also play guitar in a new Charlottetown freak-pop band, The Death Avengers.

1. So you are in a band, how is that going for you?

Two bands. It's going double well.

2. What is the longest you've ever gone wearing the same pair of pants?

I'll let you know when I take them off. Hehe Haha.

3. In your dreams, how many strings are on your bass players bass?

I don't know if I've ever dreamt about this, but if I did, Josh would be playing a harp. So maybe 46 strings? He'd also be wearing a Hulk Hogan bandana and have one foot in a bucket of gravy.

4. If you are from the east coast, do you ever see yourself moving further inland?

I need to see ocean. Lot's of ocean. Or else!! Plus I like it here. But who knows.

5. If you were a fighter pilot, what would your call sign be?

Either "Rosebud" or "Skull Fucker"

Halifax Pop Explosion

So the Halifax Pop Explosion starts this week.
Now, with me living in PEI now, this means I will not be able to check out any of the shows other than the one that Sleepless Nights are playing.
That show is on Saturday, Oct 24th.
The line up starts out with,
Oh no forest fires, from Toronto
http://www.myspace.com/ohnoforestfires

Olenka and the Autumn Lovers, from London. On
http://www.myspace.com/olenkalovers

The Great Bloomers, from Toronto
http://www.myspace.com/greatbloomers

Sleepless Nights, we're from Halifax
http://www.myspace.com/thesleeplessnights

And the show ends with a personal favourite of mine, Snailhouse from Montreal.
http://www.myspace.com/snailhouse

Mike Fuerstack, the man behind Snailhouse has been a favourite of mine ever since first hearing The Wooden Stars on my first road trip. Tim Deon had Outlaws on a mix tape.
Since then I have had a chance to see him play many times and once opening for The Wooden Stars! This will be my first time playing with Snailhouse, so colour me excited!
I have not seen Olenka & the Autumn Lovers or Oh No Forest fires live yet, so I am looking forward to that as well. We opened for The Great Bloomers this year at NXNE in Toronto and they were great.

For anyone who is able to go to more PopEx shows than I, here is the full schedule of awesomeness.
http://halifaxpopexplosion.com/schedule.html

Now there is a lot going on this week, so how will you ever manage to keep everything organized?
Simple. My buddy Trevor over at Halifax is Burning has made up this handy little calendar to keep things in order.

Dinosaur Bones

Wednesday, Oct 20th, Paragon(Halifax) w/ A History Of, Red Mass and Crystal Antlers.

Back to work.

Well, my little week long jaunt to Ontario with Sleepless Nights is over and I am back to work, so hopefully this thing should start to see some action.

I got a list of the upcoming shows for Hunter's Ale House for November, there is some bangers coming up. So I'll have some info on those shows soon.

First big show in November is with rock and rollers Priestess!

More on that to come work is happening and I am still a little tired from Fredericton.

Immaculate Machine + Smothered in Hugs @ Hunter's Ale House

Friday, October 30th is going to be a good day. West coast indie pop rockers Immaculate Machine will be bringing their brand of pop music to Hunter’s Ale House, for which I believe is the first time they will play there.

I was fortunate enough to have played a couple shows with them about a year or two ago. Back then they were a simple little power trio. Brooke Gallupe on guitar and vocals. Kathryn Calder, vocals and keyboards and Luke Kozlowski on drums and vocals. The touring band now features only Brooke from the original line up. Luke, I think just called it quits. Kathryn is busy playing with some band called The New Pornographers, ever hear of them?

I have not yet witnessed a live incarnation of this new band, which boosts the head count from 3 to 5 people, but I am much looking forward to hearing it. I am a little sad to not see Luke and Kathryn this time around. Luke is just a really fun guy to hang out with, he let us crash on his floor one time in Victoria. Secret, his internet password is “pussyfang.” Watching Kathryn play keyboard is amazing. She often splits her keyboard so she can play bass and lead melodies, just one on each hand.

All that aside, like I said before I am really looking forward to see this new full band.

Opening up the night will be Smothered in Hugs. What a great line up. These guys are noisy pop craftsmen. I’ve witnessed them live probably 10-15 times, if not more. Each time they are great. They’ve changed a lot and maintained a consistent sound and energy each show. They’ve added Andrew Murray to their line up on guitar, which is great because it free Ryan up to not play guitar all the time and just sing. He’s a great front man and it’s not often these days you see just a singer in a band.

Make sure you are out early to catch these guys, I know I don’t have to even say, cause the following that these guys have is religious.

Here is a great video of the guys at this years ECMA’s in Cornerbrook, NFLD. It’s a new song called Kanye. Can’t wait to hear a recorded version.

Historic first post.

So this begins my simple little blog.
I am going to use this blog to mainly just talk about upcoming shows happening in Charlottetown or news about bands from PEI. I am sure there will be posts about other stuff as well, but 99% it's going to be about music, maybe some movies or tv shows I've watched.

It's nothing fancy and I'll try and keep it up date as possible, which shouldn't be a problem as I have far too much free time and most of it is based around being on the internet.

This isn't exclusive to one bar or to bar shows and not all ages shows.
